Our Story

Welcome to the SMART Africa Network,(aka SMARTA) where innovation meets impact in the realm of Medical Imaging training in Africa. Our journey starts with the realization that MRI technology has revolutionized modern healthcare delivery systems globally. However, despite grappling with the largest burden of non-communicable diseases, many African countries still face a wide disparity in access to MRI technology and experience a severe shortage of skilled MRI personnel.

To address this need, visionary MRI experts from around the world came together under the auspices of the Consortium for Advancement of MRI Education and Research in Africa (CAMERA) to chart a path to improving MRI access in Africa. With funding support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), the SMART AFRICA Network emerged as a targeted project spearheading MRI training initiatives for the region, led by African members of CAMERA.

The SMART Africa Network vision unfolds through a multifaceted approach, including the identification and training of young African MRI scientists and technologists selected from a diverse cross-national pool spanning Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, and Mozambique. These individuals will be equipped not only with technical skills but also with the leadership capabilities needed to drive MRI research and innovation in their respective regions.

SMART Africa is committed to increasing Africa's presence on the global stage by establishing an African Chapter of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). This strategic move aims to showcase and amplify African contributions to the field, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange on an international scale.

Recognizing the critical importance of mentorship in career development, we are building a robust mentorship program. Early-career African MRI scientists will engage in collaborative projects, ensuring that talent is not only nurtured but retained within the region, creating a sustainable and vibrant MRI research community in Africa.

In the digital age, access to information is key. We are addressing this by developing an online MRI resource platform, a virtual hub for education sessions and a repository of invaluable resources such as image processing tools, analysis aids, and sequence development materials. This platform will democratize knowledge and empower MRI researchers across the continent.

But our commitment doesn't end with training individuals. We recognize the importance of sustaining MRI technology within African countries. To achieve this, we are conducting hands-on training courses for MRI engineers, empowering them to not only maintain but also advance MRI technology in their regions.

At SMART Africa Network, we believe in the power of collaboration, education, and innovation. Join us on this transformative journey as we work towards a future where MRI technology is not just accessible but a driving force behind improved healthcare across the African continent. Together, let's build a SMARTA, healthier Africa with MRI technology for all.
