Nigeria MRI Workshop 2025

The 4th SMART Africa MRI Workshop took place from July 23–25, 2025, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), bringing together over 90 participants from across Africa and beyond. The event featured lectures, case discussions, and practical sessions focused on advanced MRI techniques such as arterial spin labeling, diffusion tensor imaging, functional MRI, and susceptibility-weighted imaging. The Opening Ceremony was graced by high-level dignitaries, including Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo, Chief Medical Director of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and Prof. Derek Jones, Director of Cardiff University’s Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC), who delivered the first keynote. The second keynote was presented by Dr. Johnes Obungoloch, Dean of Biomedical Engineering at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda. Participants also visited leading MRI facilities in Lagos and concluded the program with cultural engagements, including a closing dinner and a Lagos city tour. The workshop reinforced the SMARTA Network’s mission to expand MRI capacity across Africa, combining scientific excellence, practical training, and cultural exchange to foster a new generation of MRI professionals.
