I started this exciting journey with a one-day virtual webinar on September 10, 2024, where I had the privilege of speaking about "Introduction to MRI Physics." This event brought together a diverse group of professionals from across Africa, including resident doctors, radiologists, radiographers, MRI technologists, physicists, and biomedical engineers. The curriculum was rich, featuring experienced speakers who delivered engaging lectures on MRI basics.
On September 15, I arrived in Dar-es Salaam, enthusiastic to plunge into the next phase of my experience. The next day, I joined local organizers to set up the workshop center and prepare materials. In the evening, we enjoyed a lively dinner with fellow speakers and resource persons, connecting with experts from around the world.

Over the next two days (17th and 18th), I attended a fascinating workshop at the Muhimbili School of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). Renowned speakers shared insights on topics ranging from the basics of MRI technology to artificial intelligence, low-field MRI applications, safety precautions, and advanced brain imaging techniques. The masterclass and breakout sessions were especially enriching, allowing professionals to brainstorm together.

We had lively discussions, with radiologists presenting interesting cases that sparked interaction. I particularly enjoyed learning from instructors like Dr. Frank Minja, a Neuroradiologist from Emory University, USA and Dr. Nivedita Agarwal, a pediatric neuroradiologist from Italy. Career guidance and mentorship discussions further enhanced our experience, and we concluded our time with visits to various MRI centers in Dar es Salaam.
The excitement continued with the joint 4th Tanzania Neuroradiology and 2nd ISMRM African Chapter Conference at the Hyatt Regency. The theme, “Health Insights through Imaging Innovations,” set an inspiring tone for talks from key figures like ISMRM Africa; President Dr. Johnes Obungoloch and ISMRM Global President Prof. Derek Jones. Their uplifting words led to impressive presentations on topics like neurological conditions, advanced MRI techniques, fast imaging sequences, and machine learning applications. I found the lecture on writing effective abstracts particularly helpful for my future research.
A highlight of the conference was a unique fashion event called “The Art of African MRI,” organized by Prof. Godwin Ogbole and Prof. Iris Asllani. This event combined MRI and fashion, showcasing stunning designs made from fabrics featuring MRI images. I even had the fun opportunity to model an outfit inspired by Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). The event also celebrated cultural fashion from various African nations, complete with lively dance performances from Tanzanian troupes. It was a fantastic blend of science and creativity, making it a truly memorable experience.
The final day included a beautiful trip to Zanzibar, a stunning tourist destination accessible by ferry and boat. My new friends from Tanzania guided me through local markets, where I picked up some Swahili phrases and enjoyed the vibrant culture.

Looking back on this whirlwind of activities, I can confidently say it was an informative and enriching experience. Meeting experts from the UK, Canada, the USA, Spain, Italy, and across Africa reignited my passion for my work. The discussions on low-field MRI particularly resonated with me, and I’m excited about how this technology can help address challenges in my home country Nigeria, especially at my center, UNTH, Enugu. I believe low-field MRI could greatly improve access to care, and I’m eager to explore this further.
I’m incredibly grateful to RAD-AID International for sponsoring my trip and SMART Africa Network for facilitating the sponsorship and finally Prof. Ogbole for giving me the opportunity to be part of such an amazing event. I’m already looking forward to the next conference in 2025!
Asante sana (Thank you)!
