5th SMART Africa MRI Workshop 2026—advancing MRI excellence across Africa!

The 5th SMART Africa MRI Workshop is yearly capacity building for African MRI Scientists. The 5th Edition will take place from 7–8 May 2026 at the University of Cape Town (UCT), Cape Town, South Africa, under the theme “Equitable Neuroimaging: MRI, AI and Access Across Africa.”

Building on the success of previous editions, the workshop will bring together participants from across Africa and beyond to advance MRI practice and foster collaboration. We are kicking off with a full day Virtual Basic MRI Webinar on the 1st of May, to be followed by our in person session on the 7th May2026 at UCT South Africa
The programme will feature expert-led lectures, case discussions, and hands-on sessions covering advanced MRI techniques such as Workhorse Neuroimaging: abbreviated stroke protocol , Understanding Basic Pediatric Neuroimaging, Innovations in Imaging Analysis and Clinical Applications, Introduction to Advanced ASL imaging: Beyond the measurement of CBF and many more interesting topics and sessions.

As part of the workshop, the Low-Field MRI (LFMRI) Stakeholders Meeting will hold on 8 May 2026 at 6:00 PM in Rondebosch, Cape Town. The meeting will include two focused symposiums: Democratising Low-Field MRI in Africa and Overcoming Barriers to the Utilization of Low-Field MRI in Africa.
The workshop will also feature MRI Facility visits and curated networking sessions, reinforcing the Network’s mission to strengthen MRI capacity across Africa through training, innovation, and collaboration.
